SI leaders encourage and motivate other students

SI leaders 2019
Victor, Solmaz, Kateryna, Dea and Adnan

SI stands for Supplementary Instruction which implies complementary help alongside the regular lectures students attend. The SI leaders for MSc Service Management tells us why students should attend SI sessions and what motivated them to become SI leaders.

Why Should you attend SI meetings?

You should attend SI meetings because at SI we employ the non-traditional approach to teaching which focuses on group studies and interactions as a means of unravelling the difficult aspect of the various courses. We all come from different cultural, academic and professional backgrounds, which makes our sessions even more interesting and informative.

What are your best study tips?

For students who would want to challenge themselves and move out of their comfort zone, the following are study tips they can adopt.
1. Avoid Procrastination: Start reading from the first day of lectures and remember that, you can only end right, if you start right.
2. Time Management: Understand that time management is of utmost importance towards achieving studies excellence. How can you manage your time judiciously? You can manage your time effectively by drawing your personalized timetable.
3. Be Curious: Ask questions to challenge theories and ideas rather than accept them as sufficient proof.
4. Structured Exams Outline: Ensure that your report or paper is well structured to allow for easy understanding and always endeavor to stick to the instructions given.
5. It’s OK To Fail: As much as possible, avoid running into a state of devastation of why you fail a course or an exam. See failure as an opportunity to re-submit your report for a better result.

Why did you choose to become an SI leader?

As advocates of motivation, becoming an SI leader provides the platform to encourage others (Students) who might be going through the same challenges we encountered when we arrived as first-year students. This platform provides the opportunity to guide such students through the hurdles and ensure that they discover their best selves through SI. On the other hand, we have also applied to participate in this programme with an aim to become more confident in public speaking, as well as understanding our course content better too by explaining it to the first-year students.
